 A Letter From America.

The Lodge received a message via the website recently from Orlando,Florida in an email from Bro. David Murray.

David writes:

“My Uncle Bro. David Murray presented to St. James 125 Lodge a timer clock with a bell on top, to honor the Memory of his Father (my Grand Father) Bro John Murray of Lodge St.James 125. My Father Bro John Murray was made a life member of 125 on the 26th May 1937.”

David sent photographs showing the clock and also a document showing the signatures of 125 Brethren present.RWM of 125 at the time was Bro. Hugh S. Muirhead.

Lodge meetings will resume on Monday 14th September `09 with the afore mentioned timer clock & bell on display............as they are at every meeting.

Thanks go to Bro. David Murray for his contribution to the website.

Bro. Charles Cave

Recent contact has been made via the website by the Grandson of a former 125 member.John Cave who resides in Queensland Australia has a “Lodge St.James”Mark penny (pictured below)belonging to his Grandfather Bro.Charles Willoughby Cave.

John enquired if 125 had information on his Grandfather, and at the same time provided us with some information about Bro.Charles.

Lodge Secretary Fraser Walker confirmed that records show that Charles Cave joined 125 on 18th May 1918 at the age of forty-four.At the time he stayed in McCalls Avenue and worked as a Drop Forger at the Stamp Works. Before this however he had served with the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders where he been posted to the Sudan and was awarded “KHEDIVE'S SUDAN MEDAL 1896-1908” for service at Khartoum & The Atbara. In fact in his lifetime,Charles was the proud possessor of nine medals and letters from every monarch since Queen Victoria.

As previously mentioned he worked at the Stampworks in Ayr,but he was also reportedly the first man to import a doughnut making machine from America to Scotland!,so he obviously had many different strings to his bow.

He was very well travelled in his lifetime, living in America at one stage where he was employed as a University sports Instructor.

Charles eventually settled in Adelaide,Australia, where he was once asked about his varied careers, and responded by stating that he was “always prepared to do any job”.

Charles passed away in 1969 at the age of 95.

51 years and many miles had passed since Charles paid three shillings & thruppence to become a member of Lodge St.James No.125.

We thank John Cave for his information on Bro.Charles Cave.
